DESCRIPTION
House with Yellow Shades was likely painted in Gloucester, Massachusetts, where Rudolf Jacobi and his wife Anna Annot spent summers following their emigration to New York in 1934. Jacobi exhibited regularly in the United States and abroad during this period. Jacobi’s expressionist style is evident in the in the handling of the figures in the painting. They are important compositional elements yet they are individually undefined. Jacobi achieves a balance between the angularity of the buildings and the informal, fluid handling of details such as the green awnings.
